Visa Debit products address a variety of customer segments, acceptance environments and risk control considerations.  The Visa Debit product suite consists of:

  • Embossed Visa Debit encoded with a normal authorization service code
  • Embossed Visa Debit with a positive authorization mandatory service code
  • Unembossed Visa encoded with either a nomal authorization or positive authorization mandatory service code
  • Visa Electron (always encoded with a positive authorization mandatory service code)

Visa Debit
Most Visa Debit cards are still embossed and carry either the old Visa Flag logo or the new Visa brand mark.  These cards have the same physical appearance as the familiar Visa card.

Unembossed Visa
The unembossed Visa card looks like a standard Visa card.  However, there are significant changes to the physical features of these cards resulting in new card characteristics that Visa merchants will be seeing for the first time in a Visa product.

Characteristic:

  • (A) Acceptance mark: The Visa brand mark can be seen on the front of the card; some cards may have a Visa brand mark with the Electron identifier on the back of the card.
  • (B) Account number: Unembossed, laser engraved; indent printed or thermal printed (with cover).  Some unembossed Visa cards may only display a partial personal account number, in which case, at least eight digits will be displayed on the card.
  • (C) "Electronic use only" legend: Placed on either the front or back of the card.
  • (D) Cardholder name and expiry date: Printed.  Some cards may not have the cardholder name on the card or may carry a generic cardholder identifier such as "club member".
  • (E) Pre-printed four-digit BIN: Mandatory.
  • (F) Chip: Cards may carry a chip.
  • Hologram and UV element: Mandatory.

As the card is unembossed, the card cannot be manually imprinted using a zip zap machine and must only be swiped or inserted (in the case of chip cards) into your point-of-sale terminal.

Embossed Visa Debit encoded with a positive authorization mandatory service code (X2X)
This is a standard Visa-embossed card with enhanced issuer risk control through a code in the magnetic stripe that instructs the terminal to always request an online authorization.  This product is directed at getting the widest acceptance base while increasing the issuer’s opportunity to see more authorization requests.

Visa cards that are issued with the positive authorization option will have the same physical appearance as the familiar Visa card.  These cards are not widely used in the Asia Pacific region.
Visa Electron
Visa’s global electronic acceptance mark offers unparalleled and secured customer utility at more than 21 million physical locations worldwide, including more than one million ATMs.

Always authorized against the cardholder’s account balance, Visa Electron offers superior risk control through secure point of sale utility to customers at little or no additional risk.
