Olympic heroine and gold medal gymnast Kerri Strug shares experiences with local athletes and celebrates 100-day countdown to inaugural Games

Kerri Strug, a two-time Olympian and gold medalist, captured the world’s attention at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games when she was just 18. She clinched the gold medal for the US women’s gymnastics team with a near-perfect vault, despite a severe ankle injury. This performance was memoralized in the first Go World campaign during the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. At the unveiling of the new Go World advertising campaign, Strug, who was also the youngest Olympian at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games when she was 14, encouraged youth athletes to enjoy the experience and make new friends during the Youth Olympic Games. Strug, who began competing when she was eight years old, said: “The Youth Olympic Games is the perfect platform for nurturing young sporting talent on a global stage. As a young elite athlete myself, participating in the Olympic Games was more than just about winning, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of history and to share the experience with athletes from all backgrounds. This will be an amazing chance for young athletes to make new friends, learn and grow together. “This is also a once-in-a-lifetime event for Singapore, and I hope that everyone has the chance to get tickets and witness the Games in person or act as a volunteer to be part of the action,” said Strug. The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Go World campaign will run in Singapore-based print media as well as outdoor advertising at bus shelters, MRT train stations and selected point-of-sale terminals. The Visa Go World campaign will run from now until 26 August 2010. Jeffrey, Darren and Amanda are all scheduled to compete at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, which begin on 14 August 2010 and close on 26 August 2010. More than 500,000 spectators are expected to witness 3,600 young athletes aged between 14 and 18 years old compete in 26 competitions[1].
