The Olympic Games The first Olympic Games were held in Olympia in Greece in 776BC.They continued for over a thousand years until they were banned by Emperor Theodosius in 393AD. The Games were reinstated in 1896 by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin and held in Athens, when 14 nations competed in 43 events. The first Olympic Winter Games were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. Apart from a break during World War II, the Olympic Games have been held every four years ever since 1896. In Beijing in 2008, 202 nations and territories will compete in more than 300 events over 17 days, watched by a TV audience of billions around the globe. Imagine One World The theme of the 2008 Olympic Games is “One World, One Dream”. Our competition asks children to think how the Olympic spirit can united different cultures, i.e. “Use your imagination to create a drawing that shows how the Olympic Games can unite different cultures and capture the Beijing 2008 theme of “One Word, One Dream. The lucky winners from each country will be flown out to Beijing (along with a parent or legal guardian) to visit the 2008 Olympic Games as a guest of Visa.
