Survey reveals many Australians preparing for technology upgrade
New TVs, home theatre systems and Apple’s new iPhone on many Australians’ hi-tech shopping list
Australians are looking to embrace new technology and gadgets with wide screen televisions, home theatre systems, iPods and Apple’s new iPhone featuring on shopping lists in the next 12 months, according to new research conducted on behalf of Visa[1].

The online survey, conducted in August 2007 and involving 1,000 people, found:

  • 48 percent of Australian adults intend to upgrade their television to wide-flat-screen within the next two years. Twenty percent said they have already done so.
  • 36 percent of Australian adults intend to upgrade their home theatre audio system in the next two years. Eleven percent said they have already upgraded.
  • 49 percent of Australian adults own an iPod; 18 percent own more than one and 22 percent intend on buying a new one in the next 12 months.
  • 14 percent of Australian adults intend on buying an Apple iPhone during its first 12 months on sale and a further 38 percent will consider buying one in the following 12 months.

Executive Vice President for Visa in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, Bruce Mansfield, said the research indicated that younger Australians were the most likely to want to own the latest technology and gadgets.

“The under 40s[2] have the biggest appetite for mobile innovations, with 60 percent surveyed saying they were considering buying the new Apple iPhone when it becomes available,” Mansfield said.

“Mobile music is also a ‘modern essential’ with 74 percent of those surveyed aged 18 to 40 owning at least one mp3 player; and 29 percent with two or more. In addition, 61 percent said they are considering purchasing another mp3 player in the next 12 months."

“The trend also extended to in-home technology, with the vast majority of Australians in the 18 to 40 age bracket either recently upgrading or currently planning to upgrade their home theatre/audio systems (77 percent) or televisions (85 percent)."

“Wide-screen TVs are also attractive with the older generations, with 47 percent of people surveyed aged over 60 having a new wide screen TV at the top of their wish list, and a further 11 percent still considering the possibility."

“The poll shows gadgets are no longer just ‘boys’ toys’ as men and women are equally keen to keep up to date with the latest hi-tech trends and the best in entertainment technology,” Mansfield said.

[1] Survey results were prepared for Visa by UMR Research, August 2007. 1,000 online surveys were completed in Australia.  The sample was representative of the adult population aged 18 plus.
